**Where things stand.** Fed officials raised rates by a quarter point in September 2026, and most expected another hike before the end of the year. They generally agreed inflation was still too high, though they gave different reasons. Some argued that a higher policy rate would help keep energy disruptions and AI-related demand from broadening into more persistent inflation. Kevin Warsh is now Fed chair, and inflation has been above the 2% target for years, with tariffs and the Middle East war adding pressure. The central bank has also stopped signaling its moves ahead of time.

**Why a hike is being called a mistake.** The usual arguments, which I'm adding from general economics rather than from the articles, are:

  • Much of the current price pressure comes from energy shocks and tariffs. Higher rates do little about supply-driven inflation.
  • Rate changes take a long time to reach the economy, so a hike now could land after inflation has already cooled.
  • Softer employment data since September raise the risk of tightening into a weakening job market.
  • Dissenting Fed officials have warned about the inflation challenges, and the committee is divided.

**The case for hiking.** Inflation is still high, with headline PCE at 3.4% and core at 3.0% for August. Officials don't expect a return to 2% until about 2029. Hawks worry that tolerating inflation for a sixth year would let expectations drift higher.

**Market odds.** CME FedWatch put the chance of an October hike at about 17%, down from much higher odds earlier. It put a December hike at 84%. These numbers move quickly and sources differ, so treat them as a snapshot.
